Frank Martin one of Mega Millions winners, South Carolina future in doubt

By BRADY BAUMAN

Former Kansas State head coach and newly introduced South Carolina head coach Frank Martin was one of the winners of the “Mega Millions” lottery contest, according to the Columbia Confederate, a Columbia, S.C. newspaper.

The $656 million dollar prize is the biggest in lottery history.

In this rare photo, current South Carolina head basketball coach and Mega Millions winner Frank Martin disagrees with the affiliation a local Columbia, S.C. restaurant had with Coca-Cola prodcuts. Martin is rumored to be a Pepsi man.

Martin — who reportedly bought his lottery ticket in a Columbia gun/bait/day spa and gas station — said he was thrilled, according to Confederate reporter Hugh Jefferson Davis.

“What can I say?” Martin told the Confederate. “It just shows you that if you work hard in this business, do the right things and be good to people a guy born from Cuban immigrants can make something of himself in this country.”

Martin went from a no-name assistant to a millionaire as head coach of the Wildcats. Now that Martin is a half-billionaire, South Carolina fans are worried they may lose their suddenly beloved head coach.

“I guess,” John Clewkluks, a senior in Political Science, told the Confederate. “I just learned we had a basketball team yesterday. Oh well.”

Clewkluks, obviously shaken, proceeded to talk about the upcoming football season.

Martin told the Confederate that fans shouldn’t worry, though.

“It’s all about loyalty… you ever heard of that, Hugh?” he said.

Martin has not been seen since he won the jackpot. Sources close to the Confederate said he told Gamecock athletic director Eric Hyman he would taken an extensive “recruiting leave”. Sources said Martin bought one-way tickets for the islands near Jamaica, Costa Rica and Hawaii.
