Nike debuts new NFL uniforms

By BRADY BAUMAN

Ever since the Denver Broncos busted out their current uniform scheme in 1997 I’ve held a keen eye for changes in gridiron threads since. The Broncos pushed the envelope in the late 90’s with what seemed like a futuristic, Total Recall-esque look. Now with Nike as the official supplier of NFL uniforms and equipment — replacing long-time supplier Reebok — the trendy “did you see that” world of uniforms that has been rampant (cough, Oregon, cough) in the college game will be in the pros.

Most teams are going to keep their respective looks and the only thing that will be different about their jerseys will be the Nike swish. Imagine the revolt if the Green Bay Packers or Oakland Raiders “upgraded” to a “trendy” design. They’d burn Goodell’s house down — though some fan’s aren’t too happy with the way he’s ran things, anyway.

But some teams have made a few changes. Let’s take a look. (All photos come from NikeInc.com, by the way.)

1. The neck line.

New Orleans Saints

Most teams, such as this close-up of the neck line of a New Orleans Saints jersey, have incorporated this ribboned silver design that streams out of the NFL logo.

3. Lighter and more padding.

Kansas City Chiefs

In this Chiefs uniform there is a different mesh style that runs throughout the jersey. This is standard with any team that opted for the new fabric.

Kansas City's uniform stays nearly unchanged, except the "TV" numbers have moved from the sleeve to the shoulder.

3. Seattle Seahawks.

Seattle Seahawks

While most teams made subtle changes — if any at all – the Seahawks took the crown for “most changed”. Nike — which is based in Oregon, just below Washington state  — went all out with a complete redesign.
The colors are just slightly different and include two silver bars across each shoulder pad. There also seems to be a pebble type texture inside the numbers.

The Nike swish pops out in the changes made to the Seahawk's new unis.

I must admit. I’m a fan of what Seattle has done here. Besides, after the last few seasons they’ve had, they need something to get excited about.

4. Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos

The Broncos, who changed the world of NFL uniforms in the late 90’s, didn’t get too crazy with the new Nike deal.

Some of the pin-striping along the pants is subtly different, but not much.

What I do like, though, is this orange alternate. They’ve had this alternate before, but this Nike version seems cleaner and more crisp. It also seems to call back to the old Denver uniforms a little more.

That wraps up the bigger changes and differences in the new Nike uniforms. I like the changes, for the most part, and if Nike’s involvement in the college game has taught us anything, we should be in for some crazy alternates from time to time.

Bring em’ on.
